Acupuncture Therapy

Acupuncture therapy for your pet is a pain-free way to treat a variety of conditions, primarily those dealing with inflammation and pain.

Overview

At All Creatures Animal Clinic we offer the benefits of both holistic and traditional veterinary care. We feel both Eastern and Western medicine complement each other to provide well-rounded care for your beloved pets. From acupuncture and herbal remedies to diagnostics and medication, both approaches have their strengths and weaknesses. By understanding the principles behind each method and consulting with veterinarians in both fields, pet owners can create cohesive and more comprehensive treatment plans that optimize their pet’s health and well-being.

You do not have to choose one modality over the other. Bridging the gap between holistic and traditional veterinary care can give your pet the best of both worlds.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is insertion of a needle or injectable substance into specific locations to treat imbalances and disease in the body. Acupuncture points (sites where needles are placed) are chosen based on a thorough examination and Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis. This is different from, but complements, a conventional Western diagnosis.

When should acupuncture be used?

Acupuncture can be used to treat a myriad of health conditions. It can also be used to promote overall health, well-being and longevity. The following list are examples of conditions/diseases – this list is not exhaustive:

  • Arthritis

  • Cruciate ligament injuries

  • Disc disease

  • Seizures

  • Heart disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Liver disease

  • Gastrointestinal diseases

  • Disorders of the skin

  • Cancer

Acupuncture can also be used along with conventional therapies to either mitigate side effects or enhance treatment. For example, acupuncture can be used to combat and reduce side effects of chemotherapy. It can also be used to help decrease the dose of and need for certain medications.

How often should my pet receive acupuncture treatment?

Number of treatment sessions vary greatly depending on the pet’s condition(s). Minor, acute conditions may require 1-3 treatments, while chronic diseases (e.g., arthritis, degenerative myelopathy, and chronic kidney disease) may require lifelong management.

Frequency also varies depending on the condition treated. Severe problems (e.g., limb paralysis with no deep pain) need to be seen 2-3 times per week. Slowly progressive conditions (e.g., arthritis, kidney disease, etc.) may require once monthly treatments for maintenance.
